Beagles
Foundation dogs set the "type" of
beagle that the breeding program produces, including such factors such as
bone structure, gait, ear set, tail brush- all the myriad details that combine
to make beagles from each kennel unique.
New bloodlines with desirable characteristics (those lacking, or perhaps
overstated in the existing kennel) are introduced by breeding outside the
kennel to another stud dog or by leasing a female from another breeder.
We have five generations of our own stock under
our roof, so see if you can trace the traits- what we were breeding for, and the
results! As an example, there's
Maestro, his daughter
Dixie, her son
Calvin, Calvin's
daughter Tulip, and now Tulip's puppies
Malcolm and
Albert (their brother
Dylan
went home as a pet).
