When looking for a puppy, it is
important to consider your lifestyle. Puppies change your
perspective and add responsibilities- it should be a fun
experience, so it's worth considering whether it's the right
choice for you. There are a lot of dogs out there, and Beagles
aren't for everyone.
Should I buy a
puppy?
- Are you usually home, or do you
often travel, shop, or work late? No puppy should grow up inside
a crate, waiting for mom and/or dad to come home. Don't be
discouraged- just be patient and wait until your lifestyle
changes.
- Do you like to walk and play, or
watch TV? Not everyone has a great deal of energy- that's true
of dogs, too. If you're looking for a couch companion, you may
want to consider finding a mature dog, perhaps a retired show
dog, rather than a puppy.
- Are your small children old
enough to play without hurting a dog? Again, if your children
are young yet (under three years old and too young to really
understand "No!"), don't be discouraged- just be patient and
wait for them to grow. There's another benefit: you can
introduce your kids to a dog at an age when you can expect them
to be responsible.
- Do you have a fenced yard?
Remember, beagles are on-leash only! They will follow their
noses and can never be left free to run outside a friendly yard.

Should I buy a
Beagle?
-
Fun
family members, full of playful energy, they make friends
easily and rarely "favor" anyone over everyone else- they're
equal-opportunity friends.
-
Short-haired (low maintenance), they require only weekly
brushing or grooming with a rubber mitt, ear checks, and monthly
heartworm protection.
-
Compact and clean, many beagles lick their paws clean.
-
Beagles travel easily in their crates, which fit easily
into most cars.
-
Joyful
and playful, stable and trustworthy.

Reality check!
- Beagles are not for you if
you want an off-leash dog. They're scent hounds, and will
follow their noses - one squirrel means you may never see
your Beagle again! (...and the most common cause of death is
being run over by cars.)
- Beagles need frequent
play and attention. This decreases with age, but
as a breed, beagles are inquisitive and smart- that means
that if you repeatedly say, "I don't want to play now,"
they'll amuse themselves- and that can be costly.
Consider carefully- do you
really want the equivalent of an active 2-3 year old child
tugging to play for a few hours a day?
- Before you bring a beagle
home, you must have a secure, PHYSICAL fence in your back yard.
Beagles will ignore "invisible" electric
fences. Your fence should be "privacy" butted end-to-end,
although chain link, wire horse fencing, tight slats and
wrought iron are good alternatives.
"If a
baseball can fit through a fence - so can a Beagle."
- Beagles are not good
protection or guard dogs. Generally, they're friendly to
everyone they meet.
Overall, Beagles are fun-loving,
happy dogs. One owner
was heard to say that,
"Beagles belong in
Disneyland -
they are the happiest dogs on Earth."

Buying a Jackpot Beagle
We sell beagles in three ways: as
Pets (who will not be shown),
as show Beagles, and occasionally as a
combination of the two.
Show/Pet beagles are the buyer's companion but remain available for the
breeding and showing programs at Jackpot (the
pup's breeder). We do not sell puppies for home
breeding purposes.
Our adoption process includes an interview to
ensure you and the beagle are suited. There are
many breeds, and beagles are not for everyone.
Be sure to read up on
Beagle puppies
and about Beagles
in general, or learn about puppy
litters.

At what age can my puppy come
home with me?
|
Your beagle can come home
with you at no fewer than nine (9) weeks of age.
We encourage you to visit
us and play with your puppy from as young as
four weeks, but we will not send a puppy home
until they have had a chance to grow, to adjust
to life away from mum,
and to build up immunities. We provide
their first two (2) immunization shots and an
AKC CAR (Companion Animal Recovery)™
microchip.
|
|
What is your
spay/neuter policy? |
At
the time of purchase you sign an AKC limited spay/neuter agreement,
which means that unless you specifically purchase your puppy for the
purpose of showing, you will have your vet perform the procedure as
soon as the puppy is of age. |
|
Will my new
puppy require shots and vet appointments immediately? |
Your puppy won't need the third set of
shots for three to four weeks after they come home with you.
It's always a good idea to acquaint your new puppy with your
family vet, but that's more for your peace of mind than out of
necessity.
We
send your puppy home with two sets of shots and an AKC CAR
(Companion Animal Recovery)™
microchip implant that vet or animal shelters can use to
immediately identify your pet.
|
|
How and
when are home visits scheduled? |
Home visits are scheduled on weekends and
holidays, according to our work and show schedules. Call us to
ask about a specific weekend (and we'll ask you to confirm again
the Friday before you come) to set a time and to get directions
to our home. |

Jackpot pet Beagle puppies sell for $850 and go to
homes at nine (9) weeks of age.
They have had two (2) sets of vaccination shots and are
permanently identified with a universal AKC CAR (Companion
Animal Recovery)™
microchip before they go.
Pets are sold on an AKC limited
registration and you are expected to spay or neuter your beagle
at six (6) months old.
We invite you to visit our kennels near Atlanta, Georgia to
acquaint yourself with the puppies and meet their family. By
appointment (kevin@jackpotbgl.com or call 770-513-7959), we have
family visits when you can come out, ask questions, and play
with the beagles.
